Ultrasound is a painless test used to examine different organs in the body. Ultrasound machines generate high-frequency sound waves that are pointed to a specific area using a hand-held device called a transducer. The waves bounce off the subject area and are picked up by the transducer. The computer then processes the waves into images.

The Benefits of an Ultrasound are:

  • Noninvasive
  • Real time visualization of cysts, tumors and stones
  • Detects enlarged kidneys, liver, and pancreatic structures, abnormal gallbladder and gallstones, and thyroid masses
  • Detects gynecological abnormalities (enlargement of ovaries and/or uterus)
  • Excellent for detecting blood clots in veins of the legs
  • Useful for detecting or narrowing or blockage of arteries in the neck

What to Expect

Clothing must be removed from the area to be tested. The technologist will apply a special gel onto the transducer to improve the images and will move the transducer over the body area being imaged.
